Detect PII

Find names/orgs/addresses → redact

Detect PII uses AI to read a document and find personal information (names, companies, addresses) so it can be blacked out before the file is shared or stored.

How it works

This node is the step that finds what needs hiding. It reads through a document and flags the personal details, people's names, business names, street addresses, so that a redaction step can black them out. You do not have to know in advance where those details sit on the page.

It relies on AI because personal information does not live in fixed spots: a name can appear in a signature line, a letterhead, or buried in a paragraph. The AI reads the document the way a person would and points to each piece it recognizes as identifying.

On its own, Detect PII only locates the information. To actually remove it, pair it with a redaction step so the flagged text is covered before the file leaves your hands. That combination is how you share a document without exposing who it belongs to.

Common use cases

Real situations where this node earns its place in a flow.

Strip details before sharing

Find names, addresses, and organizations in a document and black them out before it leaves your walls.

Anonymize before you store

Remove identifying entities from documents you keep for review or model training.

Prepare a third-party copy

Redact everyone who should not be named before handing a file to outside counsel or a partner.

What you set up

  • Choose which kinds of personal information to look for (names, organizations, addresses).
  • Connect a redaction step downstream so the found items actually get covered.
  • Decide whether to review the findings before redaction or let the flow run through.

Common questions

Does this remove the information by itself?

No. Detect PII only finds the personal details. Add a redaction step after it to black them out. Splitting the two lets you review what will be covered before it happens.

Why use AI instead of a fixed rule?

Personal information shows up in unpredictable places and phrasings. A fixed rule misses anything it was not told about, while the AI reads the whole document and catches names and addresses wherever they appear.
